Note: Mines of Moria introduced customized trait sets that function much in the way this page (written previously) does--with the added exception that you are granted special bonuses for equipping a number of traits from a specific line. While the new trait sets and their bonuses have made this page somewhat obsolete, some reference to trait builds might still be had from it. So for the present time anyway, it will remain as a legacy page for this guide.


Being a true hybrid class, the captain perhaps has the easiest options for various builds, with a minimum of sacrifice to his overall utility. Below are the three most common builds the captain can opt for, in addition to his standard hybrid build, which offers him the greatest utility as a class.

Disclaimer: In the best of all possible worlds, we'd be ideally suited to get our virtue traits up to rank 10; realistically, you should strive to get them as high as you can.

Tank Build:

To take as much damage, and draw as much threat as possible.

Focused Strikes
Reduces miss chance.
Line bonus: 2% Fear resistance.

Intimidating Shout
Generates more threat with "Threatening Shout."
Line Bonus: +10 Might

Defiance
Adds 10 seconds to “Last Stand” duration modifier.
Line Bonus: 2% Fear Resistance.

Turn of the Tide
Adds 3% to “Routing Cry” Damage + adds a Stun.
Line Bonus: +10 Might.

Expert Attacks
Adds 5% to Critical Chance.
Line Bonus: +10 Might.

Man Sword-damage Bonus
2% bonus to 1h and 2h sword damage.

Man of the Fourth Age
+20 to Will.

Strength of Morale
Restores 3000 Morale.

Duty-bound
Bonus to fellowship’s Morale.

Balance of Man
1% bonus to Evade, Parry, and Block.

Suggested Equipment -- Tank Build

Standard
Intricately Woven (crafted crit version) Standard of Hope for the 20% Morale buff and 10% Melee output.

Armour
Heaviest, with highest Armor Value; consider bonuses to Evade, Parry, and Block first; Agility, Might, and Vitality next; In-combat Morale regen, and Maximum Power third.

Weapon(s)
1-handed sword and shield with bonuses to Evade, Parry, Block.

Healing Build:

To focus on maximum healing and healing efficiency.

Now for Wrath
“Rallying Cry” will also heal a small amount of Power.
Line bonus: Line bonus: +30 Max Power.

Subtle Command
Lowers threat by a medium amount.
Line Bonus: +2.0% Fear Resistance.

Fear no Darkness
“Words of Courage” has a greater effect in increasing the Morale of your allies.

Blood of Númenor
Allies renewed by “Escape From Darkness” will return with full Morale and more Power.
Line Bonus: +30 Max Power.

Armour
Heavy armour with bonuses to Tactical Crit multiplier.

Weapon(s)
1 handed weapon and shield with bonuses to Will, Evade, Parry, Block, or any weapon with a bonus to Heal modifier.

DPS Build:

To output as much damage as possible.

Captain's Valour
Banner of War evokes greater Might and Agility upon the captain's allies.

Defiance
Adds 10 to “Last Stand” duration modifier.
Line Bonus: 2% Fear Resistance.

Turn of the Tide
Adds 3% to “Routing Cry” Damage + adds a Stun.
Line Bonus: +10 Might.

Expert Attacks
Adds 5% to Critical Chance.
Line Bonus: +10 Might.

Captain of War
“War-cry” attacks with greater speed.
Line Bonus: Mark Skills Reset Timer is reduced -2.0 a second.

Renewed Voice
Battle-shout recovers faster.
Line bonus: +10 Might.

Heavy armor (crafted and/or dropped) with buffs to your critical chance, or consider buffs to Agility (Crit %), Might (Damage), Fate (Tactical crit %) and Will (Power), followed by buffs to Block, Evade, and Parry.

Weapon(s)
2-handed sword with similar buffs, and high DPS (Light Damage, if possible).
