Valdurion‘s Captain Guide (I would like to thank my shield-sister, Qwynn, for her invaluable contribution to this guide.)
In order to catch up to the guild who began the game a month or so earlier than I did, I had to solo quite a lot. In the course of only a few weeks, I got from level 1 to level 35. This gave me a good chance to look at what captains can do without having any other class to add anything to its abilities. In that time I found the captain is a brilliantly created class which can solo very easily and has more life expectancy than any other class, possibly with the exception of a guardian. And in the course of a half hour can perhaps out-kill a hunter or champion, who while doing more damage, need to stop combat to let their morale and/or power return. They also need to take many risks to kill as fast as they do, and sometimes die as a result (though a good hunter or champion won’t be dying so often). Captains are not as fast at killing mobs, though with the proper traits they can defeat their enemies fast enough. Yet even without a DPS build, they are a steady defeater of mobs with good heals, and a pet (herald), and a lot of buffs that, when all active, will give them the edge they need to keep killing non-stop indefinitely. No breaks and no deaths mean a faster kill ratio in the long run. This is exceptionally good if you want to solo for fun, want to level fast or want to farm an area. When I caught up in levels to my guild I was able to get the much needed group experience I was lacking in to start. And I found that not only were captains good at just going and fighting alone, but that they were made to be in a group. The whole concept of a captain is to be a leader. And you cannot be a leader if you are alone. With excellent buffs and the ability to be an off-tank and an off-healer, they are a welcome addition to any group. Most will find the captain to be very versatile, because while other classes profess to this, I think a captain is the only class that can actually stand strong in all fields and not feel they are lacking in any way. Of course it goes without saying only so long as you learn group etiquette and how to play a captain, so as to fully realize their potential. This guide is not an uber manual to being the best player in the game. It’s a simple, common sense guide to give you the basics, let you know the pros and cons of being a captain, what sort of play style he has, and how to fit in with other players. |
